For a beginning GM, the location-based method of adventure prep is the best way to go: Draw a map. Number the rooms. Key the rooms.

While it is fun for my players' characters to exist in a soft unshaped world, where the adventure can take place anywhere, even in unplanned spaces, I must say I miss dungeons.
Dungeons are great for staging encounters because you know, control and prepared the space yourself. You know where the yellow slime is, and you know that the goblins nearby can hear your players shouting. This makes improv a lot easier.
Players will likely also find it easier to immerse themselves if the space they have to imagine is confined and easier to describe by the DM.
